TO THE TUNE OF THE WIND ENSEMBLE FROM BESTWINA – THE 8 TH FINAL OF THE POLAND-WIDE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION COMPETITION TITLED “DOBRE RADY NA ELEKTROODPADY – ODDAJ MNIE W DOBRE RĘCE 2016” (“GOOD SOLUTIONS FOR ELECTROWASTE – LEAVE ME IN GOOD HANDS 2016”)

008AAC 7709Some thoughts.

The one-year interval between subsequent finals of the Poland-wide environmental protection competition is, according to my personal measure of time, significantly shorter than one year. That’s because the date for the next year’s competition is determined during the competition final and preparatory works on the next edition begin after only a month’s break. This means that, in reality, there is significantly less time than stated in the official competition calendar.

This year’s edition.

The 8 th Final took place on 10 June 2016 at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw.

All attendees were welcomed by Gabriela Leszczyńska, President of the Management Board of AURAEO Organizacja Odzysku Sprzętu Elektrycznego i Elektronicznego S.A. and AURAEKO BATERPAK Organizacja Odzysku Opakowań S.A., who assumed the role as the final’s host not for the first time. She was accompanied by her co-host, Karol Lechowski, an artist and musician from MEDIA1. They did splendidly throughout the entire event. That includes dance routines and summersaults, as can be seen in the photo gallery from the event.

The honorary patronage over the event was held by the Chief Inspector for Environmental Protection, thus a short speech praising the event attendees was given by Ms Małgorzata Tomczak – Head of the Market Supervision Department at the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.

Joanna Stocka, PhD, a demanding but kind-hearted person, also praised the youth participating in the competition, vowing that the teams and their environmental work will yield even better results in the future.

A representative of LG Electronics from Mława, a Business Partner of the Competition, presented the main areas to which television sets manufactured in Poland are exported and encouraged the youth to start and engage in initiatives that support the development of environmentally friendly attitudes. He also added that LG undertakes many such initiatives.

Results announcement.

This year’s competition included 27 teams, each comprised of five members and one supervisor. Projects were sent in by 19 teams. Teams that did not meet all requirements set out in the competition regulations were not evaluated by the Competition Committee.

Evaluation method and results.

The Committee evaluated received projects according to the criteria laid down in the competition regulations, granting a specific number of points for each task:

1. Team presentation.
2. Diagnosis of the current state (in your town/city, in your commune).
3. Preparation of the collection.
4. WEEE and used battery and accumulator collection.
5. Summary and final report preparation.

The evaluation of projects submitted under the competition, including the description and documentation of tasks carried out within the framework of the competition, allowed to determine the following results:

  • 1 st Place I.J.Paderewski Lower Secondary School No. 10 in Gliwice.
  • 2 nd Place Rev. Bernard Sychta Lower Secondary School No. 1 in Kościerzyna.
  • 3 rd Place John Paul II Lower Secondary School No. 4 in Pruszków.
  • 4 th Place Krechowce Uhlan Regiment Lower Secondary School with Integrated Classes No. 3 in Augustów.

List of Awards.

The members of winning teams (places 1-8) and their Supervisors received individual in-kind prizes, such as AMAZON and PocketBook e-book readers and LARK tablets. In addition, the Competition Committee awarded the following prizes to schools that joined the competition and supported their pupils.
For:
- 1 st place – TV LG 49UF6407.APD (diagonal screen size: 49 inches, 4K).

All TVs mentioned above are the latest products of LG Electronics and offer the latest features that will be useful in the multi-functional use of the TV. The 4K standard ensures a professional image resolution four times higher than the FULL HD standard.

Special Award.

The team that placed 9 th , i.e. the Mira Zimińska-Sygietyńska Public Lower Secondary School No. 3 in Pruszków, received a very attractive Special Award from LG Electronics: the opportunity to visit the LG Electronics plant in Mława and see its cutting-edge production lines in action. The participants of previous editions of the competition who had an opportunity to visit LG Mława have spoken very highly of this experience. In their opinion, the visit to the LG plant was extremely interesting. The visit includes a meal organised by the sponsor, while the costs of travel to the LG Electronics plant are covered by AURAEKO.

Applause, fanfare, radiant smiles, unconcealed joy and shouts mixed with each other for nearly half an hour when the Competition Committee’s results were being announced and prizes were being awarded... and that was only the beginning.

Youth Wind Ensemble from Bestwina.

After the prizes have been awarded, it came time for the long-awaited moment, the second part of the concert given by the wonderful 25-person Wind Ensemble from Bestwina conducted by Urszula Szkucik-Jagiełka. During the first part of the concert, the ensemble showed great rhythm and an attractive repertoire that, in their performance, invited the audience to dance. And... what was bound to happen, happened. As the ceremonialism that prevailed during the festival opening and competition result announcement faded away, the “green company” slowly but increasingly more visibly began to sway to the rhythm of twist. The hall came alive, as many more people were eager to dance. Everyone began to tap, wave their hands and shake their heads as if trying to twist it off. A true menagerie. The host, who maintained a calm demeanour until then, made a face as if to say: well... my friends, we’re playing it like that? Having so much fun without me... not gonna happen..., and performed a salto mortale in the air. The next second, his jacket was flying to the right, to the left, up and down, until the applause rolled down from the upper rows (due to the amphitheatrical arrangement of seats in the Copernicus Science Centre Hall). Everybody was moving to the rhythm of music, regardless whether the ensemble played staccato, legato or even largo. It did not feel like a concert performed by a wind ensemble, but rather a rock concert by a famous band. Bravo, bravissimo could be heard from all around the room. The band wore red attires, while attendees wore green t-shirts. After a while, I was unsure whether it was the ones wearing green playing and the ones in red dancing or vice versa. I’m pretty sure that the ones in green played and those in red danced. I remember having an argument about this with someone at lunch. Maybe the readers can visit the photo gallery and decide who played, who slept and who danced. Nevertheless, I’m entirely sure that Urszula Szkucil-Jagiełka conducted the ensemble, and there was no Lewandowski and no goals.
