Św. Józef 2019 027Is your health important to you?

If you answered yes, pay attention to the environment in which you live. Are there such devices in your environment as: TV set, computer, printer, pendrive, dial-up modem, fridge, electric stove, etc.? If you answered yes again, you should know that it is electrical and electronic equipment, which loses its values and becomes waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) over time. Is the storage of waste electrical and electronic equipment safe? You will find the answer to this question further in this article. Another group of devices posing important risks to the user is devices powered by batteries and accumulators. Although the use of new batteries and accumulators is safe, throughout their useful life batteries and accumulators are ageing, and after giving away all values, they become a serious risk to our health. Why?

Batteries have complicated chemical processes, in which chemical compounds take part, being toxic to humans. Heavy metals present in batteries, (including: lead, cadmium, mercury), as well as acids or alkalis forming the electrolyte that have corrosive properties, pose a particular threat to the environment and human health.

In waste batteries and accumulators, just like in waste electrical and electronic equipment, ageing processes occur, as a result of which hazardous compounds dangerous to human health and environment are created or released. Please note that one ton of waste batteries includes on average: 3 kg of mercury, 0.5 kg of cadmium and a few kilos of nickel and lithium.

Lead - causes diseases in living organisms, including: brain damage, kidney diseases, as well as gastrointestinal diseases and neuropathy.

Mercury - causes massive environmental contamination, poisons living organisms; in humans causes, among others: damage to the nervous system, kidneys, respiratory failure, bone deformities.

Cadmium – impairs processes in the body, causing, among others: damage to kidneys, liver, osteoporosis, anaemia and other health devastations.

Nickel – damages the mucous membranes, causes changes in the bone marrow, which promotes cancer.

Lithium – causes pulmonary oedema, damages the nervous, digestive and cardiovascular system.

Did you know that one small button cell battery can contaminate one cubic meter of earth and 400 litres of water?

That is why all the people on our pictures posted in the gallery get rid of waste equipment, as well as waste batteries and accumulators. Follow their example. Be healthy, bring waste equipment, as well as waste batteries and accumulators for separate collections.

The pictures were taken on 6 April 2019 during the implementation of the environmental education project at the St. Joseph Parish in Pruszków.
