Promoting environmental attitudes of pre-school and school- age children in the context of environmental threats caused by packaging waste 2014 Edition.

In Poland, the problem of excessive packaging waste is getting more and more serious each year.. On average, each Pole disposes of 34 kg of waste every year. We leave 496,000 paper and cardboard packages, 430,000 tonnes of glass, 264,000 tonnes of plastic and 136,000 of metals from purchased products (source: Polish Packaging Research and Development Centre, http://www.cobro.org.pl). According to the research by OBOP, 3/4 of Poles do not recycle waste [source: http://www.mos.gov.pl].

The social consciousness relating to rights and duties resulting from the act as well as environmental awareness are very low. That is why educating the society within the discussed area, in particular promoting appropriate attitudes, is so important.

The project of environmental education covers the crucial environmental protection from consequences of inappropriate packaging waste disposal. The project has been prepared in order to raise environmental awareness that is particularly important in case of children. Promoting environmental attitudes should begin in pre-school and early school age. The aim of such projects is to develop knowledge and capabilities and to point out the ecological attitudes.

Addressees of the project.

The project was addressed to children, pupils and teachers of pre-schools and elementary schools as well as local communities.

Educational goals of the project.

The main and most important long-term objective of the project was to limit the quantities of waste in Poland and to re-use it. The main goal will be achieved through the following detailed goals:

1. Increasing the knowledge of participants about packaging waste disposal and creating a responsible consumer attitude.

2. Learning how to use the packaging waste in the local community and how to assess the waste production within own community.

3. Motivating to act and promoting positive attitudes preventing waste production and dealing with it amongst participants of the project and their communities.

In order to achieve the above mentioned educational goals, the project introduced from 15 February to 15 July 2014 a range of measures, in which two groups of children, 30 persons each, participated from Pre-school Department in Sulejów and the Elementary School in Uszczyn, the Łodź Voivodeship.

Forms of activities covered by the project

1. Talks/lectures/discussions for children.
2. Solving ECOnotebooks.
3. Test EKOOmnibus to be solved by children.
4. Anonymous survey filled by parents.
5. Educational games – learning through playing
6. Contests for individuals and institutions.
7. Technical and manual activities.
8. Practical classes in the field.
9. Waste-paper collection throughout the whole project.

Achieved results of the project

Results of contests for individuals and groups are one of the achievements of the project.
Individual and group prices were awarded. The same with products of technical and manual classes (see: pictures). The project assessed the threats of packaging waste within the community of pre-school and early school age pupils participating in the project. Moreover, 368 kg of waste paper were collected.
The presented results of the project as well as noticeable activity of children, families and peers allow to conclude that the assumed goals of the project have been achieved.
The project gained high interest among adults from the community expressed by their eagerness to help children with the transport of the collected waste paper and to fill the anonymous survey concerning the threats caused by packaging waste. The children were eager to participate in contests, which is proven by the number and inventiveness of their contest works. Every child was awarded a small gift, e.g. brand-name pen, AURAEKO BATERPAK ORGANIZACJA ODZYSKU OPAKOWAŃ key rings. The winners of the contests received bigger awards but receiving an award itself regardless of its value was a nice gesture and evoked smiles of children. The achieved results of the project allow to conclude that all of the pre-defined goals of the project have been achieved.
